We've been taking families (apart from our own!) walking in the mountains for years now so we knew that adding in some fun activities would be popular. (Here's our daughter Olivia jumping into a mountain river and our son Isaac on a zip wire).

As small groups are best when children are involved, our summer activity holidays are usually just for you and your family. The grade of walks would depend on the amount of walking your children have done but we have lots of enticements up our sleeves including a dog or three and the promise of a dip in a river or lake at the end of a day's walking.

Most families choose to go canyoning as one of the activities. It's a great way to cool down on a hot summer's day and involves descending a watery ravine, in places abseiling, wearing a wetsuit. These are provided, along with helmets. All you need to bring is appropriate footwear - a pair of old trainers will do.

Our options, apart from the "W" word, include -

  • Canyoning*
  • A day at the beach with surf/body boards
  • Mountain biking
  • Horse riding*
  • Climbing*
  • Via ferrata*
  • Kayaking*

* Activities led by fully-qualified local instructors.

If you'd like to include a night, or more, out in a mountain refuge/hut, just add 50€ per person, per night.

Our prices (see details below) include 3 of these activities although if you wanted to do more they could be arranged at just a little extra. To give you an idea here's a slideshow of some photos of a family activity holiday we recently organised. This family opted for a week's walking in the Picos with 3 nights out in mountain huts and finished off with canyoning then surfing at the beach before heading to the Guggenheim in Bilbao on their way home............

Here's what Andrew, the father, said afterwards,

"Totally unique, remote and unspoilt.  I can not speak highly enough of our wonderful hosts / guide, Mike and Lisa.  We simply gave them a rough idea of what we wanted to do and they organised everything ................. absolutely brilliant!  I can't say we weren't nervous before we set out on our adventure, but we needn't' have been, it was amazing how everything fell into place".
